Even the safest San Antonio motorists may find themselves involved in a car accident at some point during their driving history. In this case, knowing what steps to take immediately after an accident occurs is crucial. Not only will it preserve the safety of yourself and others, taking the right steps will also help should you decide to file an accident claim down the line. State Farm recommends the following advice if you’re involved in an auto accident.

Check for injuries & move your vehicle

In the event of serious injuries emergency medical personnel should be summoned immediately. If you and your passengers aren’t hurt, check on the status of any other drivers involved. If everyone is safe, attempt to move your vehicle out of the way of traffic. Pull over to the side of the road and wait for the tow truck to arrive. If you can’t move your vehicle due to damage, set up road flares or warning triangles and find a safe place to wait for help.

Contact the police

While waiting, it’s best to contact your local law enforcement. Even in relatively minor accidents the police can help redirect traffic to ensure damage is controlled. Police will also make a report on what transpired, which will be useful if you decide to file an accident claim. Police reports are considered an unbiased source of information, which lends assistance when establishing fault.

Compile information

Ask the other drivers involved for their contact information as well as insurance company info. If there are any bystanders nearby be sure to get their information also. Much like the police report, bystander statements are considered an impartial source of information, so they are often highly useful during court hearings. You can also take pictures of the scene to document any road conditions that may have led to the accident.
