3 serious health and safety concerns associated with shift work

People accept shift work for many reasons. Sometimes, they need to stagger their availability to care for children with a spouse. Other times, they may want the differential pay available if they work third shift or split shifts.

Most people define shift work as regular employment during times outside of the standard 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. work day. While shift work does offer benefits including flexibility for family needs and better pay in some cases, it is also associated with some unique hazards.

Sleep disruption

Even those who consider themselves night owls may eventually accumulate substantial fatigue from working second or third shift for many years. The human body’s natural circadian rhythm produces a desire to rest after the sun sets. People become exhausted and dysregulated after years of working late shifts. Sleep disruption can cause a host of issues, including difficulty getting rest during the day and mental health challenges.

Increased accident risk

Exhaustion is one reason why there is increased risk for injurious incidents among shift workers. Fatigue can affect how well they operate machinery. Some of them may even fall asleep while working in a factory or similar environment. Those who have to drive as part of their job can also be at increased risk. Motor vehicle crash risk is higher late at night due to factors including driver fatigue, decreased visibility and increased impaired motorist presence on the roads.

Stress and cardiac issues

Forcing the body to stay up when it wants to sleep may require that people push themselves to stay awake. The stress of working unusual hours can lead to cardiovascular disease and even issues with digestion. The lack of readily available food options enjoyed by those working first shift could lead to poor nutrition, which may only compound the other issues associated with shift work. The stress created by social isolation and limited time to take care of oneself can also have a long-term negative effect on the human body.

Those who develop serious medical issues associated with shift work may be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. Both acquired medical conditions and injuries may lead to a successful claim for medical coverage and disability benefits. Recognizing the hazards associated with shift work can help workers stand up for themselves if their jobs compromise their health.
