El yacimiento petrol\u00edfero siempre ha sido un lugar peligroso para trabajar. Con el reciente auge del petr\u00f3leo en Texas y en todo el pa\u00eds, el n\u00famero de accidentes en campos petrol\u00edferos ha aumentado considerablemente. De 2008 a 2012, el n\u00famero total de muertes registradas en los yacimientos petrol\u00edferos fue de 545, seg\u00fan el Cr\u00f3nica de Houston<\/a>. Adem\u00e1s del elevado n\u00famero de muertes en ese a\u00f1o, se produjeron numerosos accidentes con lesiones graves, como 675 fracturas \u00f3seas, 92 quemaduras, 79 casos de p\u00e9rdida de miembros y 82 personas aplastadas mientras trabajaban en el campo petrol\u00edfero.<\/p>\n

Como las muertes y los accidentes se producen poco a poco, en lugar de en una cat\u00e1strofe a gran escala, han pasado en gran medida desapercibidos. La OSHA no cuenta con una normativa espec\u00edfica para el petr\u00f3leo y el gas, y algunos de los 95 inspectores Texas no tienen experiencia ni formaci\u00f3n real en el sector y carecen del derecho a cerrar cualquier emplazamiento si detectan condiciones de trabajo inseguras.
