How spinal cord injuries can affect victims

On Behalf of | Jun 8, 2022 | Injuries |

People who suffer a spinal cord injury have to realize that their back isn’t the only area of the body that’s affected by this type of injury. The reality for these individuals is that they can have many other symptoms. These other issues can lead to considerable medical care needs, which means more expenses for the victim.

The location of the damage to the spinal cord is one of the primary factors that determines what other effects the person has to deal with. The consequences of the injury occur below the level of the damage. This means that an injury to the neck area will impact more of the body than one that occurs to the lower back.

What are some effects of spinal cord injuries?

There are some symptoms that are more common than others for a person who has a spinal cord injury. Some of these include:

  • Changes in your reflexes
  • Irregular heart rate
  • Problems breathing
  • Bladder or bowel incontinence
  • Challenges with muscle movements
  • Lack of range of motion

Severe pain is also possible, but this is always limited to the area of the injury. Some individuals who have this type of injury suffer from nerve pain that can radiate throughout the entire body.

When the spinal cord injury is due to the negligence of another party, the victim may choose to take legal action. This can help them to recover the medical care costs and other financial damages associated with the injury.  Just don’t waste time setting things in motion so you don’t let the time limit to file the case expire.
