Even the safest drivers in Texas may find themselves involved in car accidents. However, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of being involved in a collision, which will benefit you as well as fellow drivers. Consumer Reports offers the following advice to help you stay safe behind the wheel, which must be a concern for every motorist.

Maintain a Safe Speed Limit

It’s no secret that speed kills. This is especially true when coupled with other dangerous behaviors, such as drinking and driving. When you drive in excess of the posted speed limit you reduce your reaction time substantially. That means you may not be able to avoid sudden road hazards or unexpected maneuvers by other motorists, which can easily lead to disaster.

Keep Distractions to a Minimum

Driving while distracted is another dangerous behavior that can result in serious accidents. Along with texting and driving, distractions can include a wide range of behaviors. For instance, even carrying on a conversation while driving can cause your attention to be pulled away from the road. Always keep both hands on the wheel and try to avoid changing radio stations or adjusting your GPS while your vehicle is in motion.

Don’t Drive Drunk (or Buzzed)

Drunk driving is still a huge issue and unfortunately some drivers are not fully aware of the risk it poses. Even driving while buzzed can be a recipe for disaster and may also land you in serious trouble if your BAC is beyond the legal limit. If you plan on drinking during a night out, arrange for a designated driver or find an alternative way home (such as a cab or ride share).
