9 out of 10 accidents are caused by human error

Most people insist that they are good drivers. In fact, most drivers think that they’re above average, and they may complain about the lack of skill shown by drivers around them.

However, the fact of the matter is that most people are not good drivers, and they cause many car accidents. They may blame other things, such as the vehicle itself or the design of the road. There are times when these things are responsible for accidents. However, studies consistently find that at least 90% of accidents stem solely from human error.

There are many types of errors

One reason that this percentage is so high is simply that “human error” is a catch-all category for every mistake that a person can make on the road. Texting and driving is a human error. Tailgating is a human error. Changing lanes without using a turn signal is a human error.

Many of the things that people do are issues that they would consider fairly minor. Someone who is in the left turn lane may not turn on their blinker, assuming that the fact that they’re in the lane is a big enough indicator that they’re going to turn. But that could confuse drivers around them. Someone who is driving with the aid of their GPS may think that it’s a minor issue to update the address while they drive, not realizing that they’re making a mistake by looking at the screen instead of the road.
