How can I avoid distracted driving?

Kevin B. Miller |

Distracted driving in Texas can lead to a life-changing collision. As a result, it’s up to every motorist to do his or her part to keep distractions to a minimum. Geico recommends the following tips in this case, which can help you stay focused on the road.

Never drive fatigued

Driving while drowsy can cloud judgment and prevent a motorist from reacting quickly to a situation. Additionally, studies show that people who drive tired have a four times greater chance of experiencing an accident. Try to get enough rest before setting out and if you feel tired on the road pull over.

Don’t eat and drive

If you have a particularly busy lifestyle you may be tempted to eat breakfast or lunch while you’re driving. This behavior can be just as distracting as texting and driving, especially if you spill or drop whatever you’re eating. Eating and driving also entails removing your hands from the wheel, which is considered a manual distraction.

Put your phone away

While it should be a no-brainer, many people still text and drive. The fact remains that using your mobile device while driving is a considerable hazard, to both yourself and other drivers. In the event of an emergency, pull over to a safe area before making any calls or texts. Even hands-free devices can be problematic, so it’s best to just turn off your phone and store it away while driving. If you need to use your phone for the GPS feature, be sure to set your destination before you leave.
