Safety tips for new drivers

Kevin B. Miller |

If you have a new driver in the family in San Antonio, you’re probably concerned about his or her safety. Fortunately, there are a few steps new drivers can make to preserve their well-being as well as ensuring other motorists remain protected. Nationwide offers the following advice, which will allow you and your loved ones to remain safe and secure when behind the wheel.

  1. Use Defensive Driving Habits

Defensive driving involves certain habits that increase alertness in drivers (the more alert you are the better your reaction will be should an unexpected event occur). To drive defensively you should pay attention to your surroundings, watch what other drivers are doing, and always leave enough space between you and other vehicles. Also, keep things like weather conditions in mind, as poor weather can result in a more challenging driving experience.

  2. Pay Attention

Distracted driving is a huge issue, especially among younger drivers. That’s why staying focused on the road is so important, which can prevent accidents and save lives. Paying attention entails more than just not texting and driving. Distractions can involve a number of occurrences, including seemingly harmless actions like talking with your passengers. You should always strive to keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times.

  3. Don’t Speed

Speeding is extremely dangerous and can easily lead to significant injuries or even loss of life. There are also financial costs, including penalties for traffic violations and a raise in your insurance rates (which are already pretty steep when younger drivers are on your policy). Along with obeying speed limits, new drivers should also make it a point to abide by other traffic regulations, including coming to a full stop at stop signs and avoid drunk driving in all situations.
