Shattered glass may lead to severe cuts, blindness and amputation

You knew you suffered serious injuries in the collision caused by another driver who blew through the stop sign. What you did not expect was that shattered glass caused the most severe injuries.

Bits and shards of glass catapulted in every direction inside your vehicle, which rolled over several times. The glass struck and embedded in many parts of your body, causing deep cuts – some of which just missed a major artery. It will take time to recover.

Head trauma and shock

Car accidents may lead to an assortment of injuries, including fractures, traumatic brain injury, spinal trauma and internal injuries. The source of some of these injuries may be shattered glass.

Shards of glass from the front and rear windshields, side windows and even sun roofs may penetrate your eyes and torso, leading to significant blood loss and an assortment of injuries such as:

  • The loss of a limb: Large glass fragments may embed in the muscle tissue and bone of arms and legs. In some instances, doctors may have to amputate to save someone’s life or if the limb was severely crushed.
  • Traumatic brain injury: Skull fractures and brain bleeds may result after a driver or passenger strikes his or her head against a windshield.
  • Spinal cord injury: Glass shards can damage and even sever the spinal cord. The results may lead to paralysis.
  • Eye injuries: Glass injuries could potentially lead to blindness and scarring. Lifelong vision problems are possible.
  • Deep and severe lacerations: A severed artery may lead to death. Damage to muscles and internal organs may occur, too. And when glass sprays into a person’s face, disfigurement may result.
  • Shock: A person may enter shock after the severe loss of blood. In worst-case scenarios, internal organs such as the brain, kidneys, liver, heart and lungs may shut down.

Blood transfusions are just enough to overcome these serious glass-related injuries stemming from a car crash. It may take hours of surgery and months of rehabilitation to recover.

Seek legal guidance

The actions of a negligent driver led to your injuries, severe enough that you needed surgery. And those severe injuries were the result of shattered glass. You may be entitled to compensation, so seek a legal advocate.
