What are the steps to take after a car accident?

As you drive through the roads of Texas, whether in the wide-open countryside or the packed streets of the cities, you hope never to find yourself in a car accident. However, it is best to be prepared in case it does happen.

According to NerdWallet, even if you are not at fault for the car accident, you might find that you need to submit a claim to your own insurance. You might initially rely on them to pay for repairs or medical expenses, but you will be responsible for any deductibles. Then, they will work with the other insurance after the paperwork has been processed for reimbursement. To make the process of submitting your insurance claim much smoother, it is beneficial to undertake a few tasks.

After the impact, move everyone to safety when possible, especially if there are no serious injuries. If possible, drive the cars to the shoulder. Take any precautions to avoid further accidents, such as setting up flares or other signals to oncoming traffic. Even if it was a minor accident, you should call law enforcement. This provides you with a police report to help with your insurance filings. However, if an officer is not available, you might be expected to file a report yourself.

Once you have assessed the situation, you might need to call for emergency personnel. If anyone is injured, especially if it seems serious, call 911 for an ambulance. Also call 911 if the situation seems dangerous, such as an imminent explosion or fire, so that the necessary first responders can be dispatched.

If you are able to do so, fully document the crash, including taking notes of the time and what you remember happened. Photograph the scene and all vehicles involved, and get copies of the other driver’s insurance card. If possible, confirm the identity of the other driver by looking at his or her license, or taking a photo. Try to avoid saying that you or your car is fine, in case a problem emerges at a later date.
