Sleep deprivation raises workplace injury risks

Kevin B. Miller |

Workers in the known hazardous industries in San Antonio and elsewhere in Texas might not realize the importance of a good night’s sleep. A lack of sleep increases their workplace injury risks. Alertness and concentration are crucial elements when it comes to reaction times in emergencies.

Whether they work in the oilfields or construction sites, they will have to deal with the hazards related to fires, chemicals, dangerous machinery and ladders. According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep deprivation is more hazardous than any of these. It increases the risk of a work-related accident by as much as 70%.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says that fatigued workers have impaired motor skills, and they tend to take risks and make poor decisions. Sleep deprivation could cause workers to fall asleep at work, and it affects their memory and ability to process information. Shift workers are more vulnerable and they may also be unable to deal with stress. Along with increased injury risks, sleep deprivation may also take a toll on production.

The workers’ compensation system is a no-fault program, which means that even if a worker’s sleep deprivation led to a workplace injury, he or she would be entitled to benefits. However, that does not necessarily mean the employer will authorize the claim. Many work injury victims in San Antonio rely on an experienced workers’ compensation attorney to navigate benefits claims for them. The support and guidance of legal counsel will increase the chances of receiving benefits without unnecessary delays.
