The many struck-by injury hazards on construction sites

Kevin B. Miller |

Ground-level workers on construction sites in Texas are exposed to multiple struck-by hazards. They have to be alert to dangers posed by falling objects from higher levels, flying debris and moving equipment. Employers are responsible for the health and safety of workers, and they must address known hazards. Their duty to protect employees includes providing safety training focused on the hazards workers can expect to encounter.

The following safeguards could prevent struck-by incidents:

  • Eliminate equipment-related struck-by hazards: Where possible, remove workers from areas where vehicles of other moving equipment are used.
  • Mitigate equipment-related struck-by hazards: If separating workers and moving equipment is not feasible, equipment operators and ground workers must be aware of each other’s locations at all times.
  • Elimination of potential falling objects: Implement measures to prevent tools or materials falling from elevated levels, such as toe boards or tethers used to secure tools to framework or tool belts.
  • Prevent access to high-risk areas: Barricading areas where elevated workers could drop objects or where equipment operations take place can protect ground personnel against struck-by accidents.
  • Barricade flying debris areas: Jobs like grinding and cutting concrete produce flying objects from which the operators completing the tasks are protected. Other workers should not have access to those areas.

Although many struck-by hazards cannot be eliminated, proper planning and adequate safety training could reduce exposure. Workers who have suffered struck-by injuries on construction sites in Texas might be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits to cover medical expenses and lost wages for those whose injuries caused temporary disability.
