What is asbestosis?

If you work on construction sites in the San Antonio area, you could be exposed to something called asbestos. As discussed in a previous blog post, there are many diseases that are connected to asbestos exposure and one of them is asbestosis.

According to the American Lung Association, it is important to find a doctor who is experienced with cases of this type. The doctor will be able to provide you with clear information concerning the disease as well as its treatment. The first thing that the doctor will probably tell you is that asbestosis is the term used to describe the scarring that has taken place on the tissues inside the lungs. This scarring happens when the dust or fibers of the asbestos have been breathed in over a period of time.

The next item of discussion is the treatment. There are many ways that you can manage the condition and these include the following:

  • Regular exercise
  • Every day, consume at least six glasses of water
  • Be careful to avoid breathing in bad air like smoke, vapors and fumes
  • Rest frequently
  • Wash hands to prevent unnecessary infections

Additionally, it is important for you to eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, and avoid salt whenever possible. At times, or later on, you may need help with breathing through pulmonary rehabilitation and an oxygen mask. If your condition is a serious one, a lung transplant may be recommended. Vaccines may also be suggested as a way to keep you from getting pneumonia or the flu, which can make the condition worse. If you smoke, you will need to quit.
